Het proefschrift 'Treatment of source separated urine and its effects on wastewater systems' beschrijft het resultaat van drie modelstudies en twee studies op labschaal, naar de effecten van gescheiden urine inzameling op bestaande afvalwatersystemen.

De algemene conclusie van het onderzoek luidt: 'In general, the laboratory studies confirmed the model studies. Treatment of source separated urine should be integrated with the treatment of sludge reject water. Nitritation and nitrogen removal should take place before the precipitation process in order to recover KMP. The treatment of sludge reject water could later be followed by partial urine separation in a transitional phase from conventional systems towards source control systems. Urine should be collected undiluted for cost-effective truck transport, or treated on a local scale. The treated urine effluent can be discharged into normal sewers and removed with the rest of the wastewater for further treatment.'
